"Fine art is that in which the hand, the head and the heart of man go together"

John Ruskin

Roland is a studio potter and ceramic artist producing both thrown and hand-built pieces. Vessels are thrown on a traditional wooden kick-wheel. He explores the notion that a vessel embodies something more than simply being functional and utilitarian.

Hand-built pieces are made for decorative impact ; designs are based on forms and patterns found in nature. Roland uses a diverse range of clays from coarsely grogged crank to smooth porcelain carefully matching materials to the processes chosen for each individual piece. He uses an electric kiln firing to earthenware and stoneware temperatures.
