Roland's passion for ceramics began in the late1960-s. Before progressing to  kiln-based work he learned to work with clay using classic modelling techniques, creating mosaics from tiles made in a local factory and experimenting with plaster reliefs.

On leaving school he attended Shoreditch College, University of London - studying Design, Technology and Art with a Pottery focus. His interest in clay continued throughout the early seventies working as a studio potter in Cambridge where he gained experience  making, buying and selling pottery. He began his teaching career in 1972 and taught at secondary level  in Cambridgeshire, Bedfordshire  and the West Midlands. He also taught in Jamaica ( 1975 -77).  He retired from teaching in 2009.

Roland completed an MA in Ceramics at the School of Art and Design, University of Wolverhampton in 2010, followed by two years as Artist-in-Residence at the University.  Throughout his MA he was encouraged to explore new bodies of work and to examine  creative methodologies. Regular sketching and drawing combined with repetition throwing and experimenting with mark-making consolidated  and refined his skills and practices.

In his making and decorating Roland aims for freedom and spontaneity when applying his ideas to clay. His glaze palette is relatively plain in colour, using unglazed oxides on his unusual wall plaques.  His many commissions have included  making plaques for specific locations  in homes and gardens.

He was selected as a CPA (Craftsman Potters Association ) Associate Member to exhibit at Earth and Fire at Rufford in 2011.

He has exhibited in craft galleries and  local craft fairs in the West Midlands.
